Archaeologist Alicia Odewale uncovers powerful stories of resilience from the history of Black Wall Street.

Stories of resilience have emerged in the century since the attack on Black Wall Street in the vibrant Greenwood district of Tulsa, Oklahoma. We start with archival recordings to hear directly from survivors of one of the worst episodes of racial violence committed against Black Americans in the country’s history. Then archaeologist and National Geographic Explorer Alicia Odewale, a Tulsa native, reveals how archaeology can be a tool for reclaiming hidden narratives and pursuing restorative justice.

As an assistant professor at the University of Tulsa, Alicia Odewale specializes in African Diaspora archaeology in the Caribbean and southeastern United States, with a theoretical focus on community-centered, anti-racist, and Black feminist archaeology. She is committed to decolonizing research agendas and encouraging more participation by Black and Indigenous scholars in the fields of archaeology and academia.
